Power Bills To Increase Under New Scheme

A treasury official has told a Senate hearing that households will pay an extra $78 for their electricity in the first year of an emission trading scheme, rising to $146 in the second year.

Treasury's general manager of its macroeconomic modeling division Meghan Quinn stated that the prediction could be over-estimated, because figures are based on household spending trends that go back nearly five years.

Treasury's assumption for the 2011/12 year which is the first year of operation for the carbon pollution reduction scheme - is that retail electricity prices are expected to rise 7 per cent, the equivalent of $1.50 a week extra or $78 a year.

In 2012/13 they will rise by an additional 13 per cent, or $2.80 a week or $146 a year.

These figures have been calculated on the assumption that the entire cost will be passed through to consumers and that there will be no change in behavior either at the consumer level or the producer level.

In India these day the government also increases electricity
bills. This is really a great disaster to all of us.

This is not a great idea.

we should transition to green power. implementation should be gradual to allow for adjustment. people ranting about not being able to afford it are living in cloud cukoo land, but unfortunately are in the majority. so we'll just continue as we are until crunch time! fair enough - have it your way

Either we pay for what we cause or our children pay - I want to pay and I do not want my children to pay for my consumption. When we run out of oil and coal we will really find out what electricity costs. If we pay now to become sustainable it will be much cheaper for everyone in the long run - green house is not a sad joke it is very real.

" I want to pay and I do not want my children to pay for my consumption"
Hi Mark, we and our children pay for the greedy government, not just for the consumption.

I am at Energy Australia which was taken over by true energy. My question is the rates which now are 18.620 and will rise by to 20.15 in January. I currently have 8 percent. I wonder if this is a better deal.

i dont get how is wind and sun power more expenisve than coal (coal has to be dug up refined and transported to the plants) wind and sun does not need to be dug up and does not to be transported. I just think these power companies are just simply ripping us off.
