Credit Cards Being Used Like Cheques

The Reserve bank announced on Wednesday that credit cards could be heading the same way as cheques because shoppers are switching to debit cards.

Credit card transactions rose by 3.8 per cent in 2008-09 but use of debit cards rose by 14.7 per cent a recent report showed.

Debit Card Use Growing

The latest RBA data has shown that Australians are shifting to debit cards from credit cards when making purchases and that the value of purchases and cash advances on credit and charge cards fell 1.5 per cent to $18.8 billion in August from July.
