In the past if you were a HIV carrier then it was close to impossible to secure life insurance. However, in recent times improvements in medication, and a better understanding of the long timer implications of the virus, has allowed insurance companies to offer cover in some circumstances with a loading depending on the progression of the disease.
The types of questions that will be asked by the insurance company will relate to the extent of your condition which will include you’re most recent CD4 result and viral load. Other questions that will be asked is when you were diagnosed with HIV, how it was contracted and what medication you are on.
If you have a healthy CD4 count and Viral Load and have not developed any symptoms of AIDS, then it is possible to secure cover in many circumstances. Generally speaking, it will come at a loading of plus 200% but whether or not cover is available and the loading associated is decided on a case-by-case basis by the chief medical officer at the insurance company. No money will be taken out of your account until you agree to the terms and conditions put forward. If there is a loading of +200% that will mean that you will pay 3 times as much for your cover, but there will be no exclusions so if you are to pass away from HIV then you are fully covered as your application will have been medically accepted at the time of application.
Different insurance companies will offer different terms, so at Rate Detective we can do all the hard work for you and find you the most competitive cover.
If life insurance is not available, then there is always the option to secure $30,000 in lump sum cover by taking out a funeral policy, which is not medically underwritten (your medical condition is not taken into account). The only criteria for such policies is there is generally an exclusion on death by illness in the first 12 months. After you have held the policy for more than 12 months then there are no in-built
