This term refers to debt wherein payments have been missed. In the case of home loans, a borrower is said to be in arrears when they miss a loan repayment once or several times. The lender may then penalise the borrower by charging fees, although this may be avoided by paying on time, or discussing other options available when the borrower is no longer able to make the regular mortgage repayments.
