History of BankWest

BankWest started in 1895, as the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia.

It was founded by the Government of Western Australia to help develop the State's farming industry.

It became a trading bank and changed its name to the Rural and Industries Bank of Western Australia in 1945. Over a period of 50 years it grew to become a market leader in its home state.

The bank changed its name to Bank of Western Australia Ltd, in 1994 and adopted the trading nameBankWest to identify it with the State as a whole.

The Bank of Scotland acquired BankWest in December 1995.

As part of the sale agreement the Bank of Scotland subsequently offered 49% of the shares in BankWest to the public.

BankWest is based in Perth, Western Australia and provides full banking services in WA and has offices all over Australia. While the bulk of BankWest loans are written in WA, other states account for almost 50% of BankWest's lending. BankWest has over 600,000 customers who are served by a large number of branches and telephone and Internet banking through BankWest Online Banking system.

BankWest is fully owned by HBOS Plc, who are one of the world's biggest finance groups.
